Mary Williamson Houstoun and Charles Spalding Wylly letters, 1827-1828, 1922.

This collection consists of two groups of letters. The first contains copies of five letters from Mary William Houstoun to her mother, Mrs. Jonathan Thomas, December 22, 1827-January 4, 1828. They were written from "The Village" on St. Simons Island, Georgia, and describe the home life of Capt. Alexander Campbell Wylly (1759-1833), British Army officer and one-time Governor of New Providence, Bahama Islands, and his wife Margaret (Armstrong) Wylly (1769-1850), as well as the marriage of their daughter, Caroline, to James Hamilton Couper. There is much detail of life on St. Simons and of prominent people who lived there. The copies are in the Hand of Charles Spalding Wylly and the whereabouts of the originals is unknown. The second group consists of letters from Charles Spalding Wylly to his niece, Margaret Couper Stiles. The only complete letter is dated Brunswick, February 12, 1922. They contain information regarding the family. There is an incomplete sketch of the Armstrong and Wylly families.
